Longtime Longwood megachurch leader Joel Hunter endorses Joe Biden
Former Longwood megachurch leader Joel Hunter announced Friday he was joining a group of evangelicals backing Democrat Joe Biden for president.
Hunter, who served as pastor of Northland Church for 32 years until his retirement to become a community activist in 2017, told the Washington Post that he and other leaders came together to create Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden" because of Bidens biblically balanced agenda" despite disagreements on abortion, the Post reported.
Hunter gained national fame when he delivered a prayer at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver and joined a religious advisory council to President Barack Obama, under whom Biden served as vice president.
But Hunter said he voted for President Trump in 2016 because Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton "never did reach out to the evangelical community, he told the Post. So I thought, were not going to have much of an influence or impact on policy with her, but we might with Trump. ... Well, lets give it a shot.
But, he added, Ive never seen someone so divisive and accusatory. Were becoming divided and angry, and its the opposite of pro-life.
