We lived on the border of MS-13 territory when we bought our house. The have since been gentrified out of the neighborhood.

Not nice people, but I must say I never felt seriously threatened by the proximity.

10. Not Mexican. Salvadorian.

MS-13 Stands for Mara Salvatrucha. The 13 symbolizes alliance with the Mexican Mafia which is a large prison gang that controls many aspects of prison life, especially in the West and South West of the United States.

They started in Los Angeles as a response to Salvadorian immigrants being picked on by Mexican gangs. They were deported in the 80's during the Reagan years and went back to the civil war in El Salvador. Came back trained up in weapons and tactics by either the CIA, if they fought for the right wing death squads, or by the Socialist backed military if they fought for the government.

They are a relatively small but pretty violent street gang. They are a problem but not the boogey man the right wingers make them out to be.

MS 19 is not well organized, they are hundreds of isolated "clubs" and they are very violent. The MS 13 are unlike gangs like Hells Angles, who are highly structured and organized and manage to maintain some degree of control over members.

MS 13 is another convenient booger man for the Republicans to instill fear and hatred in their ranks. They are Hispanic, so it is Ok to hate them. They may not be as potentially deadly as some of the Neo-Nazi groups, but those old boys are white, so they are OK.
