I remember my childhood and early adulthood - the 4th of July is supposed to be about local communities and families. Hometown parades and fireworks, small but friendly, maybe a potluck supper, a softball game, a dance for the young folks. OK I'm from the Midwest so maybe my expectations were lower. But during the Eisenhower and Kennedy years, this was how everybody celebrated the 4th of July. Politics didn't even enter into it, as far as I can remember.

The Bicentennial of 1976 did change things though. After it became a TV spectacle with fireworks across the country, the TV media found a way to keep people home and glued to their TV sets EVERY year. Somehow the little hometown American parades, community softball games and barbecue picnics couldn't compete with that. Most of the kids today have never seen the American 4th of July that I (we) grew up with.

If Chump doesn't know that, he's completely stupid. The town clears out early - as a matter of fact most of the Congressional people are already gone. DC is horribly hot and sticky in July, always. The only people who stay are the ones who have no choice.
