particularly the president

Trump would have to prove "that the statement was made with 'actual malice'—that is, with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not."

After all the lies Trump & his people told, giving campaign data to the Russians, Russian money coming into the NRA and apparently making it into ads that help Trump, etc, even the FBI and Special Counsel thought it was worth looking into for more than two years. About 11 agencies thought the Russians were messing with the election to Trump's benefit. Many media orgs jumped on board.

So Trump generally hasn't a leg to stand on.

Two year statute of limitations has run out in most jurisdictions.

Specifically, it would depend on what was said and when it was said.

He is following Putin's and Bibi's lead. Last week both of these people moved against Print and Media persons whom wrote or spoke anything negative about them.

Only an idiot would choose to open up that can of worms. But Trump is an idiot so he may do it.
