(5,633 posts)the .45 is a high caliber pistol round. It's unusually and un-necessarily powerful and heavy imo. Police officers here in Georgia carry Glock .40s, and I think the most common pistol round is a 9mm.

(12,002 posts)With a 200 grain bullet they are virtually identical. The .40 is a higher velocity, generating roughly twice the pressure levels of a .45. Typically the .45 relies on a higher bullet weight: 230 grain compared to a 180 grain .40 bullet. So the choice is bigger but slower and with a lower magazine capacity, or lighter and faster with a higher capacity magazine.
