"Look at Chile in '73," they sniff, "and look at it now."

Of course, they forget that Pinochet presided over two horrific recessions - in '75 and '82.

By the time he left office in '90, per capita GDP was only 15% higher than in '73.

And that's despite Reagan giving them most favored nation trading status (flooding the U.S. market with Chilean grapes at California's expense) and writing down billions in Chilean foreign debt in the mid 80s by way of restructuring - something that Reagan adamantly denied to Argentina's democratic government at the time.

I'll give Pinochet this much: his regime was far less muerderous and disastrous than Argentina's Videla (Macri's role model these days, btw). But then, it's easy to do well when something as powerful as the White House is propping you up.
