A Democratic friend of mine who voted for Hillary, shocked me with that question recently! Yes, I knew it would be THIS bad if tRUMP were to be elected President! How could you not know??! If you had used your eyes and your ears and your heart (to see that he doesn't have a heart!), you would have known. If you're not from the tri-state area of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, you may not have been as familiar with how horrible he was as a human being before he campaigned for Presidency, but you could have done some research to find out. That aside, everything you needed to know about this conman, bullshitter, racist, lying, misogynist, narcisstic doofus of a human being, you would have learned all of that from the campaign! I'm sorry...but there is no excuse to not have known what a monster he is!!
What about YOU DU'ers...I'm assuming you're with me on this one!

(3,466 posts)getting worse the longer he stuck around. But - I didnt think it would last this long. I thought hed be gone in six months, and that the damage would be minimal and reparable. Im afeared were very near the point of no return.

(4,379 posts)If you watched his campaign you could see the crimes being committed. You could see all the lies. You could see how corrupt he is. You could see he did not care about laws or the constitution. You could see he was clueless when it came to the issues a president has to deal with.
In some ways I thought it would be worse. I thought he could start a major war by accident. That still could happen.

(155 posts)Trump has always been one giant marketing con. As the title of Rick Wilson's latest book explains "Everything Trump Touches Dies."
I didn't know about the serious Russian involvement, but it doesn't matter - if it wasn't Russia, it would have been some other massive f*** up.
It was always going to be a disaster for him and the country.

Think we are going to find out just what the true character of our police and military is in the months after the midterms.

(12,051 posts)I have no illusions about the people in this country -- too many are religious crazies or Nazis or ignorant, or all three at the same time.
I have been horrified that there is no real measure to effectively remove such a vile and damaged creature from office, and that the powers that be seem perfectly OK with that.

(18,359 posts)he would get elected. I thought he would push it was stolen angle for money and the enrage the base even further.
When I saw the Des Moines Register poll for Iowa (which accurately predicted Trump's performance in the state), I knew we were in trouble.
I remember 538 taken crap for giving Trump a 1/3 chance of winning. They took a lot of heat for that prediciton.
It is every bit as bad as I thought it would be. The surprising thing is I thought it would have ended by this point or that Trump would go into a bunker style defense. Neither has happened.

It is certainly bad, but not near what I expected. Although he has time left to screw up much more.

Should have known that the falsity of their patriotism went all the way to the core and not just skin deep. I reserve my greatest contempt and hatred for McConnell and Ryan.

(43,273 posts)But now that he has, to answer the question, no I didn't think we would
have to endure this train wreck as long as we have. And it looks like there
is no immediate relief in sight. Trump has alienated our former friends and
has made friends with our former adversaries. He has made a special effort
to undo everything Obama ever did during his term of office. It's plain to see
Trump has an interest in ruining this country.

(6,122 posts)I also thought that when the sh*t hit the proverbial fan, that the people who can put a stop to the insanity would step up and do the right thing. But I was wrong and I had misplaced trust. I should have known better but I really thought that once it was clear the Democracy was at risk theyd swallow hard and call tRump to account. But I wasnt taking into consideration how far the Republicans had been bought by the Russians. So if they tell tRump it is over, they will expose their own crimes. It is not a pretty sight. Gotta end somewhere but I guess it depends on who can prevail.

(11,767 posts)Prior to him running for office, my wife and I knew he was an ass, but he was a small time real estate guy from New York who liked to cheat on his wives and was that guy from the Apprentice who liked to say, "You're Fired". His birtherism had cemented his status for us as a piece of crap bigot. When he came down that escalator and spouted off about Mexico "not sending their best...." I thought that he was a moron who knew nothing of politics but was just running to keep his brand relevant.
I like many, though he was a joke that would flame out (like Herman Cain) and became increasingly concerned and disgusted that he was winning the primary.
The more actual scrutiny he received, the more I knew that we were going to be in big trouble because he is simply a self serving ass who has no loyalty to anyone or anything.

(56,848 posts)but, i didn't expect almost every norm of American government to be destroyed or ignored.
I had thought a few more Republicans in Congress would have spoken up and stood up to Trump, especially his kowtowing to Putin and Russia.
I thought when things got out of control with foreign policy, there would be attempts to rein him in.

(22,976 posts)Until recently, I've always given the American people the benefit of the doubt, that when the chips were down, they would all agree to rid ourselves of anything so destructive to democracy.
But now we know the extremes to which the Republican Party will actually go in order to maintain complete control -- all the way to embracing global enemies and dumping our long-standing allies, fascism, cult worship, violence (actual, and the continuous threat of) white nationalism.

(100,133 posts)...that we had driven off the edge of a high cliff and I was waiting for us to go splat. I wondered where the bottom was -- turns out there is no bottom for Trump, and we are still falling, falling.
Within a few months of his election, my stunned sensation was "I didn't know it could happen so fast" -- "it" being a fascist takeover of our government.
But most good people are just trying to get on with their lives, you know. I think they have a rock bottom belief that America will always right itself in the end. We political junkies must look a bit unhinged. (I know I feel unhinged thanks to Trump.)

(31,261 posts)Then, I could not sleep that night. I could not believe that so many of my fellow country people could be so heartless. I cancelled all activity the day after the election because I felt that I may actually attack a person if I found out they voted for Trump. That night forever changed the sense that I had that when faced with a difficult choice, we would collectively do the right thing, 63 million Americans chose hate, evil and lies.
