The Washington Post reported that it had been working on a story regarding the allegations made by Sorensen's ex-wife prior to Sorensen's resignation.

(10,372 posts)How does one look into the eyes of a loved one, take their hand in theirs and put out a cigarette in it?!?

(15,427 posts)But we must ask why so many people in this culture do these terrible things. We live in a world where corporations have propagandized us to believe only the strong survive, and have planted fear of others that aren't like us to divide us against each other so they can continue their transfer of more and more wealth to a few.
Most people struggle to make ends meet, live under constant fear stemming from economic insecurity - worried about losing health insurance, or just becoming ill if they don't have insurance. A whole segment of our population has no benefits, and experiences absolute intolerance from employers if they are sick, or end up being late, no matter the reason. A huge number of these working poor smoke, are obese, or worse, take drugs. Why? To escape.
Trump called countries over in Africa 'shit holes,' but the capitalists have made this country a shit hole for most Americans. They really have.
Part of human nature is to strike out at those who are hurting us, and when someone doesn't have the capacity to strike back at what can colloquially be called 'the man,' then they strike out at those who are physically weaker. They feel weak, so they oppress those around them in order to feel strong.
It is all about greed. It always has been. If we organized our society around human need and recognized those who feverishly amass huge amounts of wealth as what they are - freaks - then people would feel a sense of meaning, of belonging, of having reasonable power over their destiny. Doubtless there would still be abuses, but I do not believe they would be as frequent or as egregious.
But then, I am and have always been an idealist, and what I see, unfortunately, is that our common sense of human decency, compassion and belongingness has been systematically and purposefully dulled by monied interests - billionaires and big capitalists. So, as Pink Floyd says, we have become comfortably numb. Unfortunately with this numbness comes all sorts of aberrant behavior.

(4,377 posts)He says that he was the one being physically abused by her and claims he has pictures that support his allegations. It seems an odd rebuttal if false given the hyper-macho personas the Trump Republicans love to portray.
Porter looks guilty as hell, but I think on this Sorensen one Im going to wait a little longer to see if anything further comes out.

(23,181 posts)Just like kids: "She started it." "She hit me first." He is deflecting the light-of-day attack on him. I saw a picture of them and he is taller and heavier. Like a head and a half taller. They might both get physical, but I doubt he is a victim. Just my opinion.

(20,359 posts)Tried to strangle my mom, so my sister broke a coffee mug across the back of his head.
When the cops showed up (45 minutes later) he told the cops my mom attacked him, pointing to the egg on his head, and those bruises around my mom's throat were in self defense.
The cops threatened to arrest her if she pressed charges, so she didn't.

(4,377 posts)I just want to wait a little longer until the picture is clearer. Given the circles he moves in, it wouldnt be at all surprising if he was another abuser, but I just dont want to jump to conclusions. It just seems an odd thing for one of this group to claim if it isnt true.

(32,265 posts)more attention being called to this matter in the same way as the sexual assault stories. These abuses have been hidden and/or ignored for way too long and it's high time the abusers are exposed and face the consequences of their crimes.

(13,484 posts)From NCADV.org: On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.
NBC News reported last year that 3 women die every day from domestic violence. PBS reported that an estimated 2 million men beat their partners each year. And, yes, men can be abused, but because of their greater body strength that is less common, though there is no excuse for their abuse either. We have become a violent society.

(51,278 posts)it's rare for a macho man to admit to being abused by a woman
"I have never committed violence of any kind against any woman in my entire life," Sorensen wrote in the statement.
"In fact, I was the victim of repeated physical violence during our marriage, not her," he said, adding that he had consulted with an attorney and was "considering legal options to address her defamation."
